S06051 SS-UNTERSTURMFÜHRER'S PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD. (Photographie Postkarte) BACKGROUND: Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to purchase, or appropriate, "sweetheart" items and send them home. Although there was almost an unlimited selection of "sweetheart" items one of the most popular items were the photograph postcards which were relatively inexpensive, easily mailed and distinctly personal. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly 5 3/8" x 3 3/8", mid-weight card stock postcard with a full length, black and white portrait style photo of a SS-Untersturmführer in uniform with a visor cap. Visible uniform details include collar tabs and shoulder boards, part of the sleeve eagle, opened dual claw belt buckle and belt, gloves, breeches and boots. The individual, clutching his cap and gloves in his hand is standing in front of a stone railing with a treed background. The reverse of the postcard has illegible handwritten script that appears to be the individuals name and date, "1941". The reverse also has three partially illegible photographers inkstamps. The postcard shows light age yellowing.
