S024265 "SS - VLAANDEREN" EM/NCO'S CUFFTITLE. (Ärmelstreiffen)
BACKGROUND: Belgium has always been internally divided into two diverse groups of peoples and regions, the Dutch speaking Flemish from Flanders and the French speaking Walloon’s from Wallonie. During Belgium’s occupation the Germans kept the two groups separate and allowed each of them to retain pro-nazi fascist political organizations, the Flemish, VNV, Vlaamsch Nationaal Verbond (Flemish National Union), and the Wallonie, CR, Christus Rex, (Rexist Party). Both organizations had para-military, labor, and youth sections similar to the NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party). In Antwerp in September 1940, dissatisfied with the VNV, Ward Hermans and René Lagrou formed an independent, pro-nazi, private enterprise modeled after the German, Allgemeine-SS, (General-SS), entitled, "Algemeene Schutsscharen Vlaanderen, (General-SS Flanders), with their main policy being greater German control in Flanders. The Algemeene Schutsscharen Vlaanderen were outfitted in uniforms which were very similar to the German Allgemeine-SS uniforms with different insignia. In October 1942 Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler brought the Algemeene Schutsscharen Vlaanderen under the control of the SS and re-designated it as, Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen, (Germanic SS in Flanders). With the reorganization in October 1942 different cufftitles were authorized for both the Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen and the Vlaanderen-Korps for wear on the left cuff of the service uniform. Of Note: In June 1944 the total strength of the Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen was roughly, 3,500 personnel with only about 500 serving with the Vlaanderen-Korps. Also Of Note: The RZM, Reichzeugmeisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster), was official founded in June 1934 in Munich by the NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), as a Reich Hauptamt, (State Central Office), and was based on the earlier SA Quartermaster’s Department. The functions of the RZM were not only to procure and distribute items to Party formations, but also to approve chosen designs and to act as a quality control supervisor to ensure items manufactured for the Party met required specification and were standardized. Starting in late 1934 items manufactured for the SS came under the quality control of the RZM and were marked by a cloth RZM/SS approval tag. The dimensions and design of these cloth tags was altered in 1935 and this second pattern tag remained in use until early 1938, when it was replaced by a paper tag. Of Note: In 1943 the Waffen-SS assumed full control over their uniform item production and no longer fell under the authority of the RZM.
