BACKGROUND: On mobilization of the German Armed Forces in August 1939 all personnel were issued an identification tag to be worn on a cord around the neck. Following the outbreak of WWII all new recruits were issued a dog tag on their registration for to military service. If killed or wounded half the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly 7cm long by 2.5 cm wide, top half of the, horizontally oval, stamped zinc construction identification tag. The tag has a punched hole for the securing neck cord. The cord is absent. The tag has stamped markings to front side with "13.J.G.G.R.109 263 FRW."
