BACKGROUND: Sword knots (Portepee), were an age old tradition that evolved from a functional item, to secure the sword to the holders wrist, to a purely ornamental item. In June 1936 with the restructuring of all State Police forces in Germany into a single National Police Force, new regulations were introduced to bring about uniformity in dress, including edged weapons and edged weapon accoutrements.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The portepee consists of a black woven fabric strap with a central, interwoven, vertical red thread and silver/aluminum stripe flanked on either side by interwoven silver/aluminum wire stripes. The strap has an black fabric slide interwoven with alternating red and silver/aluminum threads creating a horizontal "V’ pattern. The stem is constructed of woven silver/aluminum wire with opened sections revealing an underlaying silver base. The crown and ball are both constructed of twisted silver/aluminum braid mounted on an internal wooden base. The bottom of the ball has an oval depression with a black wire insert. Near mint.
