S009385 EM/NCO'S MOUNTAIN CAP. (Bergmütze)

BACKGROUND: The Mountain cap was originally introduced for wear by Mountain, Ski and Jäger personnel in the German army in the early 1930's, with the design based on the caps worn by Austrian Mountain troops in WWI. On December 1ST 1940 the Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler authorized wear of the Mountain cap for personnel serving in the SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord" and the SS-Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen". On April 15TH 1941 wear of the mountain cap was extended to all SS mountain personnel as distinctive head dress and wear of the overseas cap by mountain troops was to be discontinued. With the introduction of the SS version of the M43 cap on October 1ST 1943 SS mountain troops were issued a distinctive edelweiss cap insignia to differentiate themselves from other personnel.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Field-grey wool construction cap features fold down back and side panels with a downward scalloped front edge and forward sides and two front closure buttons. The back and side panels were designed to be folded down to protect the wearer’s ears and neck and the scalloped front section could be secured with the buttons closed under the wearer’s chin. The cap has been stripped of insignia. The cap has an extended, cloth covered, forward, visor with an internal stiffener with a subtly raised lip to the bottom of the forward edge. The interior of the cap is fully lined in brushed greyish/tan cotton/rayon. The lining is well marked with the faint, black inkstamped, manufacturer’s name and location, "Georg Teufel Tuttlingen". Size marked 57. Teufel manufactured caps exclusive for the Waffen-SS. This is the first pattern Bergmütze produced by Teufel. Teufel switched to a single button version of the Bergmütze at some point in 1943.  Just needs insignia.
