S005595 25. WAFFEN GRENADIER DIVISION DER SS "HUNYADI" (UNGARISCHE NR.1) COLLAR TAB. (Kragenpatte)

BACKGROUND: In August 1929 the SS, Schutz Staffel, (Protection Squad), incorporated the wear of rank collar tabs on the left side of the collar of the service tunic. The SS collar tabs were originally adopted from the earlier rank collar tabs as utilized by the SA, Sturmabteilung, (Storm Troops). Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler’s obsession with pagan runic symbolism manifested itself in runic emblems used by the SS, the most famous of which was the dual sig runes used on the right hand side collar tabs as introduced in May 1933. Additional runic style collar tabs were introduced at various times through out the war. The assorted SS collar tabs remained in usage through out the war with a couple of minor alterations. The 25TH Waffen Grenadier Division der SS "Hunyadi" (ungarische Nr. 1), was formed in early 1944, with most of the personnel being drawn from Hungarian volunteers and conscripts. The name Hunyadi was drawn from the 15TH century Hungarian hero Janos Hunyadi who had been a key participant in driving the Turkish out of Hungary along with the Austrian Prinz Eugen, (Prince Eugene of Savoy), in the battle of Zenta in 1697. Due to the non Germanic status of most of the personnel authorization for wear of the SS runic collar tab was prohibited and non German personnel of the division generally wore a blank unit designation collar tab although a specific collar tab with the capital Latin letter, "H", was manufactured and distributed on a limited basis.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Black wool construction, right hand side, unit designation collar tab featuring a machine embroidered capital Latin "H", in silvery/grey rayon threads. The "H" stands out in nice, high relief. The collar tab is mounted on a tan buckram backing.
