N081774 HJ/DJ SKI PANTS. (Keilhose)

BACKGROUND: Physical fitness was a primary concern to the Hitler Youth and as a result Reichsjugendführer, (National Youth Leader), Baldur von Schirach instituted the HJ Proficiency Badge in June 1934 as an incentive for HJ members to increase their proficiency in military oriented athletics, academics, field exercises, and shooting. Beginning in the summer of 1934 the NSDAP sponsored an annual Jugendfest, (Youth {Sports} Festival), for all German youth to find the best team or individual who achieved an above average score in three sports contests. As early as October 1933 the appropriate sports uniforms were developed for these specific sporting activities. One of the sports uniforms introduced was the winter ski uniform that included the tapered "keilhose", pants as an optional item of wear. Originally the ski uniform was only permitted for wear from October 15TH to April 15TH annually but after the outbreak of the war it could be worn at any time.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The black wool, tapered trousers have horizontal half-belts to each hip, each with blackened metal gripper buckles. Three black bakelite HJ/DJ buttons are to its French fly, leading to a double buttonhole at the waist, which mates with two buttons to the other side of the fly, sewn to the interior waistband.  Diagonal slash pockets are to each hip, each with scalloped, buttonholed pocket flaps with buttons. A horizontal slash pocket, with a similar pocket flap and button, is to the right rear. Six belt loops run along the waistband. The pocket bags, fly, crotch, and waistband are lined in off-white cotton/rayon blend. Four black bakelite buttons are along the interior waistband, for suspenders, and two vertical straps, in navy blue wool, rise from the reverse waistband. The original HJ oilcloth tag is still present, although now quite worn. Pants are in overall excellent condition. Roughly a size 30 to 32 waist. Text book examples.
