N049076 DRK NCO'S OVERSEAS CAP.(DRK Feldmütze)
BACKGROUND: The DRK, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), was a voluntary civil assistance organization that was originally instituted in 1864 and was officially acknowledged by the Geneva Convention on July 27TH 1929. On December 9TH 1937 the DRK gained the status of a legally recognized organization by the NSDAP. As with other essential services in Third Reich Germany the DRK came under control of the NSDAP in late 1938 under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interiors Social Welfare Organization. DRK uniforms can be traced back to at least WWI and underwent minor modifications until August 6TH 1935 when major modifications were enacted including the introduction of the national eagle emblem with swastika. Further regulations in January 1938 dictated additional minor uniform modifications.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Second pattern DRK, NCO’s overseas cap as introduced in January 1938, and modeled after the army modified army M34 overseas cap. Charcoal grey, wool/rayon blend construction cap with fold down side and back panels with gently sloping, downward scallops to the front and the forward sides. The top crown edge and the scallops of the fold down panels are piped in bright interwoven silver/aluminum braiding indicating NCO’s ranks. The front center of the fold down panels has a hand embroidered national tri-color cockade with black and silver/aluminum wire threads and a red felt centerpiece. The cockade is neatly handstitched to the cap. The left hand side fold down panel has a second pattern, (Circa 1938), machine woven DRK eagle machine stitched in place. The insignia consists of a white vertically oval base with a machine woven black DRK eagle with a canted white swastika superimposed on its breast. The eagle is clutching a machine woven red cross in its talons. The interior of the cap is fully lined in ribbed grey cotton twill. Unmarked, but roughly a size "56". The interior of the cap also has a partial grey leather sweatband to the forward forehead section. Nice cap. (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)
