N040380 RAD OBERFELDMEISTER’S GREATCOAT. (Mantel)
BACKGROUND: The basis of the RAD, Reichsarbeitsdienst, (National Labor Service) dates back, at least, to 1929 with the formation of the AAD (Anhalt Arbeitsdienst) and the FAD-B (Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst-Bayern), Shortly after Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor, on January 30TH 1933, the NSDAP consolidated these, and other labor organizations into the NSAD (Nationalsozialist Arbeitsdienst) a national labor service. On June 26TH 1935 the NSAD was re-designated RAD. Originally FAD/NSAD personnel wore a wide variety of uniform items with a dark brown tunic being the most predominate garment. After Hitler ascension to power an attempt to standardized the FAD/NSAD uniforms was undertaken and an earth brown tunic was introduced. With the establishment of the RAD in 1935 new uniform regulations were introduced which would be altered in 1938 and again in 1939.
