BACKGROUND: The NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker's Party), was originally founded in Munich as the DAP, Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (German Worker's Party), on January 5TH 1919. When Adolf Hitler joined the DAP in the autumn of 1919 he was to reform what was basically a debating society into an active political party. Appointed as the first chairman of the party on July 29TH 1921 Hitler was to restructure it along para-military lines in a hierarchy of four levels of government consisting of the Reichsleitung, (National Level), the Gauleitung, (Provincial/State Level), the Kreisleitung, (District Level), and the Ortsgruppenleitung, (Local Level).
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A small, low numbered card (20 378) party card with a small black and white photograph to the front. He joined the party in 1925 with a Ortsgruppen number within the Gau Würtemberg-Hohenzollern is 493. The appropriate signatures and stamps are to the front. Richard Weiss, was a Propagandaleiter in the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklarung und Propaganda under Direktor Wilhelm Schmidt as an assistant coordinator of local party news from 1925-1933. During 1933 he headed his own department which oversaw both local party propaganda matters, plus an overview of the local newspapers and weekly run magazines, as well as, the weekly theatre movie shorts. His career and biography is extensive and included in this group. The card shows wear and has been stored folded, but is a nice clear item.
