N027158 DRK TEMPORARY WOUND DRESSING INSTRUCTION POSTER. (Anschlagzettel)

BACKGROUND: The DRK, "Deutsches Rotes Kreuz" (German Red Cross), a voluntary civil assistance organization originally instituted in 1864, was officially acknowledged by the Geneva Convention in 1929. In December 1937 it gained status as a legally recognized organization by the NSDAP. As with other essential services in Third Reich Germany, it came under control of the Nazi Party in late 1938 under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interiorís Social Welfare Organization.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 34 3/4" x 44 1/2" linen poster, whose top and bottom are triply nailed to semi-circular bars of wood, each slightly longer than the poster itself. Two metal hanging hooks are to the reverse of the top bar, one of whose hooks is absent, and dual, black tie tapes are to its center. To the top left of its otherwise featureless reverse is printed "Tafel Nr. 7" (Table No. 7), "Notverbšnde mit Dreiecktuch" (Field-dressings with Triangular-cloth), and "Hand, FuŖ, Knie" (Hand, Foot, Knee). A 4 1/4" long tear is to the immediate right of these. To the top left of its obverse is printed the DRK symbol of a black eagle with down-swept wings, upon whose breast is a white, mobile swastika, and in whose talons is a red, Geneva cross. The black and grey outline illustrations which follow show, in four steps, the wrapping of a hand, in two steps, the wrapping of a foot, and, also in two steps, the wrapping of a knee. "Thewes," no doubt the artistís or printerís name, is printed to the base of the last illustration. Light to moderate age yellowing and soiling is evident throughout, with several small holes and noticeable edge wear.
