N024278 RMBO OFFICIAL’S WINTER FIELD CAP. (RMBO Einheitsfeldmutze)

BACKGROUND: The RMBO, "Reichsministerium für die Besetzten Ostgebiete" (State-ministry for the Occupied Eastern-territories), was created soon after the invasion of Russia, with Alfred Rosenberg as its head. Originally envisioned as the medium to create an eventual German-Russian cooperative government, conflicts and intrigues between the RMBO and, particularly, the SS, led to the ministry instead supervising forced labor, the shipment of food produced in the territories to Germany, and the plunder of valuables from individuals and museums.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Introduced in 1943 and similar to the standard M43 cap with minor variations. Mid brown, wool/rayon blend cap, with white fleece covered, fold down back and side panels. Panels are scalloped at front, and unlike the M43 caps, have no button closure, but is one piece of material with central stitched back seam. Crown edge piped in silver wire. Machine embroidered stylized national eagle in grey threads, in the RMBO sleeve eagle pattern hand stitched to front. Short cloth covered visor with internal stiffener. Interior fully lined in greenish/grey, quilted rayon. Liner inkstamped, "G. A. Hoffmann Berlin SW 29", size,"60", and, "1944". Super nice cap.   (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)
