N021881 MINE RESCUE SERVICE MEDAL. (Grubenwehr-Ehrenzeichen)

BACKGROUND: Instituted on 13th of November 1936 as a 50mm round pinback decoration (1st type), which was superseded on Jan. 30th, 1938 by a smaller 35mm silver medal (2nd type). It was awarded to/for: 1. Members of the Mine Rescue Service who preformed outstanding rescue work, particularly at the risk of their own lives. 2. Persons (not members of the Mine Rescue Serv. - doctors, etc.) who voluntarily risked their lives to save others durning a Mine disaster. 3. Persons who rendered valuable service to the organization & development of the Mine Rescue Service. 4. All members of the Mine Rescue Service on completion of 15 Years service. It could be awarded for less time to those "invalided out" as a result of injuries incurred "in the line of duty". (Littlejohn)

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2nd type. 35mm, nickle/silver plated. Complete with original ribbon loop and piece of original ribbon. Scarce.
