N016471 KdF "D. OCEANA" CAP TALLEY. (KdF Mützenband)

BACKGROUND: Free Trade Unions in Germany were dissolved when the Nazis came to power in 1933, their members being absorbed into the newly created DAF, "Deutsche Arbeitsfront" (German Laborfront). The DAF was originally a subsection of the NSDAP, but became an affiliated organization by 1936, and was the largest of all of the various Nazi organizations. The stated aims of the DAF were to create a national community of German professional and manual laborers, and to educate them in National Socialist principles. Membership was voluntary, but most workers chose to join to take advantage of the entertainment, sport, and travel opportunities provided by the attached KdF, "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through Joy), welfare organization. The "Dampfer Oceana" was originally owned by the Hamburg American line or "HAPAG" who began charter cruised for the KdF in 1934 and was later directly purchased by the KdF in 1938. In 1945 the steamer was confiscated by the British and used to transport troops and prisoners, until October 1945 when, in the North Sea, hit a mine. Upon repair, it was turned over to Russia, where she was renamed "Sibir". She was scrapped in 1963.
