N015676 SA GARRISON CAP. (Lagermütze)

BACKGROUND: Introduced in 1934, the Lagermütze was used by SA members while on exercises and marches.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Very early private purchase example. Light brown-colored wool cap, with an expansion fold along its crown and fold-down side panels. The side panels scallop downwards towards the front of the cap. Positioned over the center of this forward, vertical seam is a 19mm metal political button attached by cotter pin. There is a grommet behind the button that the button shank feeds through for extra strength. Early 1929 pattern political eagle is attached to the side over a piece of triangular apple green wool. The apple green coloration would indicate that the bearer was part of either the Gruppe Thüringen or Pommern. Single ventilation grommets to either side of the cap. The interior, which is fully lined in grey-colored cotton/rayon. Unmarked. Roughly a size 58.    (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)

Note Early caps like this DID use either gold or silver buttons to differentiate (same as the kepi). Silver button indicates Thuringen. Pommern had gold.
