BACKGROUND: The "Bahnpolizei/Bahnschutz" (Railway police/Railway protection) were established by the "Deutsches Reichsbahn" (German National railway) in 1933, with voluntary personnel drawn from the SA and SS. The swastika was added to their belt buckles in 1935.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The stamped aluminum buckle features, to its convex obverse, a wheel with wings extending from either side of its hub, and with a mobile swastika beneath it, all against a pebbled background. Each wingtip extends into a ribbed border with simulated twisted rope trim along its inner and outer edges. Against the upper part of this border arches "Deutsche," and "Reichsbahn" similarly arches along its lower part. The stylized "A" used by the Assmann firm, as well as "DRGM," for "Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster" (German State registered design), is stamped to a plate fixed over the convex and hollow backed reverse of the buckle.
