

N006395 SA “GRUPPENFÜHRER'S” COLLAR TABS. (Kragenspiegel)
BACKGROUND: The SA, Sturmabteilung, (Storm/Assault Detachment), was originally formed in the August 1921 as a protective guard unit for the political leaders of the fledgling NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), and as with the NSDAP the SA was structure along para military lines. The SA recruited most of its personnel from the ranks of the various Freikorps groups composed mainly of disgruntled ex soldiers and was first utilized at a NSDAP meeting in Munich in November 1921. In November 1926 the NSDAP and the SA adopted the brown shirt "Traditions", uniform and a series of collar tabs were established to identify the rank/position of the wearer. By 1933 the collar tabs of the SA were relatively stabilized and were only to undergo minor modifications up to 1945. The collar tabs for the ranks of SA Sturmmann to SA Obersturmbannführer denoted the wearers unit by a numeral and color combination on the left hand side and the individuals rank by a series of pips and tress on the right hand side. The collar tabs for the ranks of SA Standartenführer to SA Stabschef were worn in mirror image with the rank displayed on both tabs.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Bright red wool construction collar tabs with fire gilted, stamped alloy, triple oak leave cyphers with three acorns. The oak leave and acorn cyphers are nicely detailed and include veins , stems and stalks and cross hatching to the acorn caps. The collar tabs are trimmed in twisted gilt wire piping and are mounted on light tan buckram bases. The reverse of one collar tab has most of a white paper RZM, Reichzeugmeisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster), label with blue printed script and black inkstamped manufacturers numerical code. The collar tabs both show moderate nap wear to the red wool base with the right hand side tab having a couple of small holes. Both of the collar tabs show light to moderate age and usage toning. The collar tabs signify the rank of SA Gruppenführer which was the third highest SA rank and was equivalent to the army rank of Generalleutnant.
