N001674 SIX PLACE MEDAL BAR. (Grosse Ordensschnalle)

BACKGROUND: The wear of Awards, Medal Bars and/or Ribbon Bars were addressed in regulations as early as the mid-1800s and followed established directives that were based on the grade or class of the award. When an award was instituted the introductory orders would normally prescribe the proper form of wear with most of the awards being permitted to be grouped together on a medal bar for wear on the walking-out dress and formal uniforms. Strict regulations listed the required order in which awards were authorized to be worn on the medal bar.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This example consists of a 1914 Iron Cross, 2ND class, Combatant's Cross of Honor 1914/18, a 1914/18 Hungarian Combatant's Commemorative Service Medal, the Austrian WWI Commemorative Service Medal, an Austrian long service medal and a 1938 Faithful Service Decoration, 2ND class for twenty-five years service. The medals and ribbons are mounted on a horizontal magnetic sheet metal bar with a protective wool backing hand-stitched to the reverse. The reverse of the bar also has two metal clips for mounting.
