N000195 TeNo LEADER’S DAGGER.
BACKGROUND: TeNo, Technischen Nothilfe, (Technical Emergency Corps), was originally established in September 1919, of trained, voluntary, civilian personnel to maintain and repair essential services in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. Many of its personnel were ex service men and a large amount of them had some type of specialized technical training which was key to its mandate. TeNo was a civilian organization administered under the Minister of the Interior, until mid 1939 when it became an official State organization under control of the Police which in turn was controlled by the SS. With this change in status a small nucleus of salaried Officials were employed to run the organization. As the war dragged on TeNo, became more and more a para military organization with its direction becoming more controlled by the Waffen SS. The Hewer was introduced along with the Leaders dagger in November 1938, and was issued to selected full time personnel holding positions of Nothelfer to Hauptwachtmeister d. TN.. The Subordinates hewer was designed by Berlin graphic artist Paul Casberg, and was modeled after the RAD Subordinate's Hewer.

The eagle is stylized, having open wings and clutching a double lined swastika having decorative lines in the legs and a superimposed gearwheel enclosing the letters "T N", with the "T" letter being in the shape of a mining hammer. The grip in yellow celluloid. The grip is in perfect condition. Wrapped about the grip is the original to the piece 23cms portepee. The scabbard is straight throughout. It has fine pebbling to the panels on both sides. The throat is retained by a single flatter head screw positioned in the center of the reverse upper scabbard. The throat is stamped with the number #2897. Excellent TeNo blade. The obverse ricasso of the blade is matching stamped (not etched), and the stamping runs vertically, toward the tip, as we see only on early examples. The matching stamping is "2897". The reverse ricasso is dark etched with the TeNo eagle grasping a swastika together with the gearwheel and "TN" initial. On either side of the TeNo eagle are the patent pending words, "Ges. Gesch".
