N027978 EARLY PATTERN DRK OFFICER’S BROCADE BELT & BELT BUCKLE. (Koppel und Koppelschloß)

BACKGROUND: The DRK, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), was a voluntary civil assistance organization that was originally instituted in 1864 and was officially acknowledged by the Geneva Convention on July 27TH 1929. On December 9TH 1937 the DRK gained the status of a legally recognized organization by the NSDAP. As with other essential services in Third Reich Germany the DRK came under control of the NSDAP in late 1938 under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior Social Welfare Organization. DRK uniforms and insignia can be traced back to at least WWI and underwent minor modifications until August 6TH 1935 when major modifications were enacted including the introduction of the national eagle emblem with swastika. Further regulations in January 1938 dictated additional minor uniform modifications. Originally DRK personnel had no official pattern belt buckle until 1919, when the Weimar Republic introduced the first pattern belt buckle for DRK personnel serving in the Reichswehr. This first pattern buckle remained in use until January 1938 when a second pattern belt buckle was introduced. Second pattern EM/NCO’s box belt buckle as introduced in January 1938.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The 1933 pattern, roughly 47mm diameter, stamped, two piece, nickel plated brass construction, belt buckle features a highly embossed oak-leaf wreath encompassing a slightly domed, central field with a cross to it’s center. Reverse of the buckle is a mirror image of obverse and has a heavy soldered catch and retaining hook. Retaining hook secures the open rectangular bar. Unmarked example. Buckle comes complete with a roughly 48mm wide silver/aluminum brocade belt with two 5mm wide, parallel, horizontal grey stripes. Belt has two vertical keepers, one on either end, in the same brocade pattern as the belt. Reverse of belt has a protective grey wool backing.    (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)
