C053381 WWI MK VIII "U.S. ENGINEER CORPS" COMPASS.

This model compass was manufactured by Cruchon & Emons of France. It is a prismatic Vernerís Pattern Compass Mk VIII. Verner Patter VIII were widely used during the First World War. Vernerís pattern is based on Charles Augustu Schmalacarderís patent. The main difference between the VIII and the model below is that the clasp used for closing the lid in the 4 oíclock position automatically lifts the dial. The solid brass construction measures approximately 5.5cm in diameter and 2cm thick with a hinged cover that is engraved to the perimeter "Engineer Corps" and "U.S." and to the bottom is engraved "C.E." ,"No 56341" and "1918." The lid folds back to reveal a aluminum floating face with a black painted center with markings to the inside and outside of the face. One small screw is missing from the top, but does not affect anything. Seems to work fine.
