C053069 WWII ALDIS LAMP. The Aldis lamp is battery powered with two triggers that are used for sending messages by tilting the mirror behind the high power light bulb. By tilting (or nodding) the mirror sends flashes of light using Morse code. A sight is situated to the top for lining up targets when transmitting. They were typically issued to S.O.E. and Resistance units for signalling aircraft from the ground. This particular lamp comes housed in it's original black painted wooden crate that is Air Ministry marked. The hinged crate (30cm x 24cm x 21cm) has a leather carrying handle and hinge latch. To the formed interior, the lamp is marked upon the metal tag "Canada" "Year 1940" "Ref No. 5A/823". The cord attached appears to be in good condition with no cracking.
