C040894 BRITISH COMBINED OPERATIONS SHOULDER FLASHES.

BACKGROUND: With the expanding role of operations involving the three branches of the services it was decided to create an organization to deal with it. The first Director of Combined Operations was Roger Keyes who was appointed on the 17th of July 1940 and was followed by Lord Louis Mountbatten in October of 1941. The Combined Operations Badge came into existence with the need for a badge to represent the Army, Navy and Air Force when involved in joint operations under the command of Combined Operations. The design was approved on the 19th of February 1942 and was used till it was discontinued on the 1st of July 1946.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A matching pair of oval shaped Combined Operations badge, about 7cm x 8cm
which consists of a "Tommy" gun, an eagle and a stockless anchor, which represents the Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, machine embroidered in red on a black felt background. The reverse of the badges have a black cloth backing with glue remnants.
