BACKGROUND: As the altitudes of aircraft increased and the flight crew and pilots were exposed to decreasing temperatures the need for warm comfortable clothing became apparent, enter Leslie Irvin, an American living in England who designed the now legendary Irvin Flying Jacket. He established a manufacturing plant in England in 1926 and became the supplier of "Irvin" flying jackets and trousers to the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain and most of World War II. The demand for his clothing was so great that the Irvin company had to sub-contract out the manufacture jackets and trousers which accounts for the slight differences in color and design.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A pair of, multi panel, brown leather flight trousers, with suspenders, fully lined with sheep skin. The multi paneled exterior has a vertical slash pocket with snap flap closures to either side that allow access to the interior and a 10" by 6" pouch pocket with snap flap closures to the front thighs. There are two vertical zippers, one to each leg, that start at the waist and run down the inside of each leg to allow the trousers to be put on or taken off easily. The center flap has a two snap fly. The elasticized cloth suspenders are sewn to the inside of the rear waist with reinforcing leather patches and are sewn to each other where they cross. The other ends have sewn on brown leather tips with seven brown alloy adjustment grommets that mate with an alloy single prong buckle with leather retaining loop that is attached to the front of the trousers bay a sewn on leather "A" strap. The entire interior of the trousers is lined with a brown sheep skin. Stitched to the inside rear of the trousers is an oilcloth patch with black printing showing a crown above "A.M." (Air Ministry), the contract number, Size No 4", Height 5'8/5/9", Waist 32-42, Seat 38-40, Length 46 and a Delivery Date of 5 JUL 1941. A. The trousers are in very good condition with the suspenders, pockets and zippers all intact and in good working order.  The leather shows normal wear.
