C036275 USAAF NAVIGATOR'S BADGE.

BACKGROUND: During World War II the Army Air Forces issued a large variety of wings and badges to signify standings and qualifications. The badges were commonly available in a standard 3" wide size for use on tunics and a 2" wide size for use on shirts. The 2" size became known as "sweetheart" wings as they were often sent home to loved ones. Some soldiers had special pins made specifically for sweethearts.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A silver qualification badge, introduced September 4, 1942, and awarded to graduates of a 20 week course in aerial navigation. The badge is in the form of a pair of out-stretched wings, whose span is 8cm, with the depiction of an armillary sphere to their center. An armillary sphere is an ancient astronomical instrument that was first used by the Greek astronomers. To its reverse is a horizontal pin-back device. "Sterling" may be seen embossed to the reverse of the sphere. Complete with dual pinch clip pin device.
