C034984 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION M1840 "Old Wrist Breaker" CAVALRY SABER & SCABBARD.
BACKGROUND:
Standardization of the Regular Army military sword was needed, perhaps due to the formation of the dragoon regiments in the 1830's. The War Department, in 1839, tested a variety of European edged weapons and ordered a study of the designs in 1840. The German firm of "Schnitzler & Kirschbaum" produced the model 1840 pattern. The NCO sword was a combination of the French and German model swords. This sword was carried by Sergeants during the American Civil war on a baldric or with an Enfield bayonet frog. Privately purchased swords, such as those carried by officers would not have inspection stamps. Only domestic swords that were produced by government contract were marked with inspectors initials. The M1840 sword saw service through to the Mexican and Spanish-American wars and remains in service as a ceremonial weapon. Of Note: The "Old Wrist Breaker" was well liked by Dragoons and Cavalry with the only complaint was the excessive weight of 4 lbs 8 oz when it rested in the scabbard.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This swords consists of a brass butterfly guard, knuckle guard and a leather, gilt wire wrapped hilt. The hilt is approximately 12cm long and a blade approximately 91cm long. Well marked "US ADK 1861". The curved scabbard measures approximately 98cm in its entirety with a pair of heavy hanging loops. Also included are the original hangers and sword knot.
