C027778 1874 PALMER INFANTRY BRACE SYSTEM.

Model 1874 Palmer Infantry brace system, not to be confused with the 1872 Cavalry brace system. The 1874 brace system was recommended for adoption, but in fact was a short lived trial piece, thereby making a complete system a very scarce piece of equipment as most were used for their leather during WW1 and WW2. Most commonly seen are the unique belt plates and hasps with their cast in standing brass loops. The 1874 system was an attempt similar to the 1872 cavalry brace system, to improve the carriage of the soldiers equipment. Designed by 1st Lieutenant George H. Palmer of the 16th infantry. This system was submitted to the 1874 board on infantry equipments, which found that most if not all of the requirements of the service are met. This set shows Watervliet Arsenal marking.
