C027294 U.S. NAVY SAILOR'S DONALD DUCK CAP.

BACKGROUND: The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established during the War of Independence by the Continental Congress on 13 October 1775, on that day they voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An excellent quality, deep navy blue wool construction "Donald Duck" style sailor’s cap features a non removable, one piece, circular crown and two piece side panels with machine stitched vertical seams to each side. The cap has a black silk cap talley with machine woven "U.S. Navy" in gold script. Of Note: The hat band, called a "talley" originally displayed a sailor's unit. Prior to World War II, in January 1941, the unit name was replaced with U.S. Navy (or U.S. Coast Guard) to aid in the need for security of ship movements. The interior of the cap is lined with black rayon with a dried sweat diamond sewn to the crown. The tan leather sweat band is in excellent shape and still quite soft to the touch. The ends of the sweat band are held together with a stitched on golden brown bow. Oval cardboard form is included.
