C023688 U.S. ARMY OF OCCUPATION MEDAL.

BACKGROUND: This medal was established in 1946 after WWII to recognize those who had performed occupation service in Germany or Japan. Originally this medal was intended for only those in the Army, but was expanded to the Air Force in 1948. It was last awarded in 1990, making it one of the longest active military awards.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 32mm in diameter bronze medal suspended on a white, black and red silk ribbon. To the front "Army of Occupation" is engraved above a fortress. To the reverse is Fujiyama with a low hanging cloud in front with two ships on water. "1945" is engraved below this scene. The medal is suspended from a white, red and black silk ribbon with a "Germany" bar.
