C023585 BRITISH P37 ENTRENCHING TOOL WITH HELVE.
BACKGROUND: Canadian personal equipment was a direct copy of the British 1937-pattern web equipment with manufacture starting in early 1940 and distribution beginning in October of the same year. The Canadian equipment differed from its British counterpart by its yellow colored webbing and the brown paint used to cover the metal parts. The entrenching tool used throughout WW2 was the exact pattern as the 1908 model except that late war models handle had a special lug on the end to which a Mk II bayonet could be attached to be used as an improvised mine probe or a weapon of last resort for close combat. The entrenching tool and carrier were a standard issue to all infantry.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A rough-cast spade and pick is marked "Perks" "1941" and is also broad arrow marked. The helve does not appear to be marked.
