C023074 U.S. M28 BACKPACK, MESS KIT POUCH.

BACKGROUND: The M28 knapsack (officially known as haversack) was modeled after the M10 haversack, which was used in World War One. One of the major differences is at the top where the mess kit pouch would sit, instead of being fastened by buttons it is done so by straps.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This mess kit pouch was also known as the Meat Can Pouch. The pouch is about 22cm wide, 21cm high and 5cm deep and it is made from the same khaki colored canvas material as the knapsack. It has a fold over flap closure with a blackened brass buckle that mates with a, blackened brass tipped, web strap attached to the front of the pouch. In the back there are three pockets that allow for the storage of the fork, knife and spoon, which are included. The right pocket is marked "J.Q.M. D. 1943." The pouch does not appear to have been issued or worn. Pristine!
