C022777 MEDAL, INSIGNIA GROUPING.

A 18.5cm x 27cm section of what appears to be a Christmas card that this officer placed his stuff on so he could display it and not lose it. The ribbon bar is the sewn on type which is rare for WWII. This would have been done in 1945 when the US troops were starting to occupy Germany, but the war with Japan was still going on. The flaming bomb is for Ordnance Branch for Officer. This Ordnance branch officer had a Bronze Star Medal so that is rare for such a branched officer. Ribbon Bar consists of: Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 2 loops (3rd award), European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 campaign stars, American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal WWII, Army of Occupation Medal. This is how they read in their entirety and correctly.
Also it is rare that this soldier had so much time in the military. He was obviously an enlisted soldier before the war started. The 3rd award of the GCMDL means he had at least 9 years of Enlisted time. He was commissioned as an officer into Ordnance and was a 2nd Lieutenant. He must have been commissioned late in the war (perhaps due to casualties, his long enlisted service, maybe the BSM helped if he had been awarded it already). He was commissioned late since he was not promoted to 1st Lieutenant and this was automatic back then after 1 year of service. If the LT bar is in fact a 1LT one (sometimes the gold polishes off) then he still have 9 years enlisted service. Officers are not eligible for the Good Conduct Medal.
