C020386 18TH AIRBORNE DIVISION "PHANTOM" SHOULDER FLASH.

BACKGROUND: The 14th Army was a fictitious Army that was organized as a sub-organization of "Operation Quicksilver" as part of Operation Fortitude. The goal of Operation Fortitude was to trick the German high command about the strength and location of the Allied forces prior to the Normandy Invasion. It was made to look like the invasion would come at Pas-de-Calais instead of Normandy. Command was under George S. Patton, Jr. Insignia was manufactured for two Army Corps and 19 "Phantom" Divisions. The patches are quite scarce as there where only 1,000 to 2,000 produced.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A machine embroidered shoulder flash, shield shaped badge that has a drab olive border surrounding what appears to be a sky in blue and white thread with a cutting edge suspended below in yellow thread.
