C012795 BRITISH ROYAL FLYING CORPS (RFC) OVERSEAS CAP.

BACKGROUND: The British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was founded in May of 1912 and by the end of the year had one squadron of airships and three of aircraft with each squadron consisting of twelve machines. By May 1915, the Royal Flying Corps had 166 aircraft and by the time of the Battle of the Somme in July of 1916 the RFC had expanded to twenty seven squadrons (421 aircraft). On April 1, 1918 the the Royal Flying Corp (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) were amalgamated and the Royal Air Force officially came into existence. By the end of the war the RAF operated 4,000 combat aircraft and employed 114,000 people.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A khaki wool construction cap and brass cap badge. The cap features fold down sides and back panels, held in place with small alloy snaps to each side of the crown, scalloping towards where it is buttoned in the front. Behind the front double button closure is a small fold down visor. Both of the two small brass buttons are embossed with a Kings crown over "R.F.C". The stamped brass cap badge, about 4cm x 4.5cm with the RFC monogram within a wreath of laurel leaves surmounted by a Kings crown. The reverse has double prongs and a cotter pin fixing it to the cap. The interior is “W” “D” ink stamped. The cap is a bit stiff.
