C009664 RCAF P37 RIFLE AMMO POUCH.

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of September 1939, the Canadian soldier looked remarkably like his counter part from 1918, wearing the 1914-18 pattern khaki service dress and the 1908-pattern web equipment. It was in September 1939 that the Canadian Army officially adopted the battle dress that had just been approved for use by the British in March 1939 and the first new uniforms arrived the last week of October. At first, Canadian troops embarking to Great Britain, were completely clothed in Canadian made battledress and upon arrival were then issued British steel helmets and modern 1937-pattern webbing. Canadian individual equipment was copied directly from the British 1937-pattern web equipment with manufacture starting at the beginning of 1940 and mass distribution began in October of the same year. The Canadian equipment differed its British equivalent by its yellower coloring and the brown paint used to cover the metal parts. The RCAF webbing was a light blue-grey in color.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A light blue-grey webbed canvas, double pocket, ammo pouch with steel fittings and brass snaps. Each pocketís top fold-over flap has a single brass snap closure which mates with one of two brass studs to each pouch front. A piece of web strap, about 13cm long by 2cm wide, has one end stitched to the inside of the each flap that extends over the pocket and is stitched to the front of each pocket under the studs. This strap secured the clips in the pocket in case the flap opened. To the reverse, on either side, are vertical painted steel belt hooks with, between them to the top, a vertical strap with a painted steel loop and another short strap with a painted steel buckle. Stamped in ink to the back of the pouch is a manufacturers mark "Z.L&T Ltd", indicating that it was manufactured in Ontario, "1944" and "C broad arrow" indicating it was issued through the Canadian Quartermasters Office. The pouch exhibits only very light color fading, with some light soiling. A very nice, unissued example.
