C001771 WWI LATVIAN MEDAL FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION WAR.

BACKGROUND: The Latvian Liberation War is also known as the "Latvian War of Independence" which were conflicts from December 5, 1918 to August 11, 1920 after the Republic of Latvia declared independence and ended with the signing of the "Treat of Riga" with the Russian SFSR (Soviet Federative Socialist Republic). In article II of the treaty, the Soviet Russia recognized the independence of Latvia as inviolable but was broken when the Soviet Union invaded and occupied Latvia in 1940. The war involved Latvia against the Russian SFSR and the Bolsheviks short lived Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic. Meanwhile Germany wanted domination of Latvia and staged a coup which led to open war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A bronze medal given to the armed forces and citizens who supported troops during battles. It measures approximately 3.5cm in diameter with a red and blue striped ribbon with crossed swords designating wounded or injured during battle. The swords measure 3cm in length with nice detail that were awarded to those who sustained a wound or injury during the Liberation War. To the reverse is stamped "Par Laviju 1918-1928" and is also embossed with "Zim Strombergs" to the front bottom. The ribbon and medal shows typical age and usage with no pin attachment to the reverse. Nice example.
