C009875 ‘KOREAN WAR ERA’ USAAF SENIOR AIR CREW PERSONNEL'S WINGS.

BACKGROUND: During World War II the Army Air Forces issued a large variety of wings and badges to signify standings and qualifications. The badges were commonly available in a standard 3" wide size for use on tunics and a 2" wide size for use on shirts. The 2" size became known as "sweetheart" wings as they were often sent home to loved ones.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An 8cm wide insignia that represents the senior air crew personnel. This is the most common United States air crew wings because it was given to radio operators, crew chiefs, aerial gunners, it could be authorized by unit commanding officer and it was permanent after completing 150 combat flight hours or if disability occurred while on duty. In the center the wings displays a relief of the United States coat of arms. Makers marked, ‘Vanguard V 21 Sterling’. Complete with pinch clip devices.
