L018376 EM/NCO'S DRILL/WORK UNIFORM. (Drillich/Arbeitsbluse)

BACKGROUND: The first HBT, (Herring Bone Twill), garments introduced for use by Luftwaffe EM/NCO personnel were the raw grey, blue/grey drill and black work uniforms introduced in April 1936 and July 1937 respectively in order to conserve wear and tear on the wool and wool blend uniforms. Although the drill and work uniforms were designed for different functions both garments were almost identical in cut and construction. The HBT garments were favoured by the troops and began to be worn in the field as a summer uniform. Generally the HBT garments utilized as the summer combat blouse followed the basic modifications of the standard issue wool garments. Regulations of September 27TH 1943 abolished the raw grey, blue/grey and black HBT uniforms replacing them with a reed green HBT uniform as utilized by army personnel. The alteration to the reed green HBT uniforms was a time and cost saving measure eliminating the need for different colored uniforms for Luftwaffe and Army personnel. When utilized as a drill or work tunic the garments were issued with no insignia with only EM/NCO sleeve rank and collar trim insignia applied to donate the wearers rank. The drill uniforms were utilized for the duration of the war with minor modifications.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Off white, cotton/rayon blend construction tunic with an HBT, weave features a vertical, five button front closure with small fold back lapels, a single metal hook and eye at the neckline and a lay down collar. The front closure has the buttons on the right panel with corresponding hidden button holes on the left panel. The tunic has no exterior pockets. The lower front tail skirt of the tunic has dual, vertical tapering darts while the reverse has a central vertical seam. The tunic has straight cut cuffs with a small vertical slash to the outside seams with dual fit adjustment buttons to each. The side panels each have five, vertically aligned, stitched eyelets positioned at the waistline for the belt support hooks. The belt support hooks are absent. The armpits each have three stitched ventilation eyelets and an open vented seam. The lay down collar has the typical zig-zag reinforcement stitching to the reverse. The reverse of the left hand side collar has an extended, button holed tab with a single button with two corresponding buttons to the reverse of the right hand side collar for a secure neck closure in inclement weather. The unlined interior has vertical, dual-ply reinforcement panels to both sides of the front closure and a single patch pocket to the left breast. There are shoulder strap attachment loops and buttons. Nice makers mark and size marking. The buttons are all the molded bakelite type and appear to have their original stitching. The tunic is roughly size 36" chest. Comes with a pair of size 32" work trousers. Small hole to the lower right leg of the trousers. Trousers look to be complete with all original buttons as well.
