L012670 DECK PERSONNEL'S PROTECTIVE LEATHER COVERALLS. (Leder Überanzug für Deckpersonal)

BACKGROUND: Protective leather jackets, pants and coveralls were listed as special clothing and were issued to engine personnel, certain deck and bridge personnel and U-Boat personnel when engaged in specific functions. The protective leather garments came in a variety of styles and colors for specific personnel. This particular style of protective leather jacket was designed for use by deck and bridge personnel. Of Note: The German’s concern with leather shortages was evident as early as July 1937 when the Kriegsmarine issued regulations that the protective leather uniforms were only to be issued when necessary in at attempt to conserve the leather and that they were to be returned to a vessels stores for reissued as required, although it appears the order was not strictly adhered to. Officer and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the OKK, Offizier Kleiderkasse der Kriegsmarine, (Officer’s Clothing Account of the Navy). Generally speaking officers bought nice quality, private purchase, uniform items but they could also choose to buy their uniforms directly from the military clothing depots. Although enlisted personnel were issued their uniforms from government supplies they were also permitted to purchase privately tailored uniforms although the price may have been restrictive. Generally junior NCO’s and EM’s ranks didn’t wear any rank insignia on their leather jackets although senior NCO’s and Officers ranks usually wore removable shoulder straps/ boards.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, multi-panel, blackened leather construction, coverall style, suit features a vertical, front, zipper closure, with a small internal wind flap, running from the nape of the neck to the crotch and a large lay down collar. This heavy duty zipper measures approximately 26" or 66cm long with missing teeth. The suit has a small, horizontal, leather strap with a female snap with a corresponding male snap positioned at the forward neckline. The suit has two vertical, slash pockets to each side of the hip with a zipper pocket positioned behind the right hip pocket that measures approximately 8" or 20cm in length. This zipper has broken teeth. The straight cut, sleeve cuffs have a small, vertical, slash to the inside seams with zipper closures and an additional, horizontally extended, leather tab with a female snap and a corresponding male snap for a secure closure. The right zipper closure is in good working order, while the left zipper has teeth missing. The inside leg seams also have a vertical, slash with zipper closures and an additional, horizontally extended, leather tab with a female snap and a corresponding male snap for a secure closure. The leather tab to the right leg is broken, but both zippers are in good working order. The reverse of the left side of the lay down collar has horizontally extended, leather strap with four male and one female snaps with a corresponding, leather reinforced, steel "D" to the reverse of the right of the lay down collar for a secure closure in inclement weather. The suit has no insignia or any evidence that any was ever applied. The interior of the suit, including the sleeves, is fully lined in heavy, mottled, charcoal grey wool. The lining has a manufacture tag of "Leder-Kühne" "Fabrik f. Lederbekleidung Dresden - N23" and "Kalbleder" (Calf Leather) to the neck, while a white fabric label is machine stitched to the side seam that has ink stamped markings that include "5961- II" an Eagle over "M", as well as the date 1. Juni(?) 1943. The suit is in overall fairly good condition with areas of light to moderate chafe wear and age and usage toning and the leather is still quite supple. Holes are present to the leather to the bottom of the right leg to the cuff. Most of the zipper are missing a few teeth and are a quite "sticky" but still function. The suits were designed large enough to fit over the basic service uniform and this example is roughly size 44" chest with a 28" breech.
