L010379 CASED HONOR ROLL CLASP. (Ehrenblattspange der Luftwaffe, mit Kasten).

BACKGROUND: In July 1941 the German Army instituted the AEhrenblatt der deutschen Heeres, (Honor Roll of the German Army), followed by the Navy in February 1943 with the establishment of the Ehrentafel der deutschen Kriegsmarine, (Honor Table of the German Navy). These lists were created as a record of honor to register the names and heroic actions of personnel who performed extraordinary service in combat. Although considered a great honor to be registered on these lists, there was no insignia awarded to the personnel as a visible sign that they were listed on the honor roll. This was remedied by the Army in January 1944 by creation of the Ehrenblatt-Spange des Heeres, (Honor Roll Clasp of the Army), and in May 1944 Grandadmiral Dönitz followed suit by instituting the Ehrentafelspange-Kriegsmarine, (Honor Table Clasp of the Navy). Not to be outdone, Hermann Göring established the AEhrenliste der deutschen Luftwaffe, (Honor List of the German Airforce), and the accompanying Ehrenblattspange der Luftwaffe, (Honor Roll Clasp of the Airforce), both in July 1944. The clasp was designed to recognize heroic acts by those who already held the Iron Cross, 1ST class, but for which the German Cross in Gold or the Knight's Cross would not be suitable. Die struck, hollow backed, alloy award with a fire gilted finish with polished highlights.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Award in the form of a roughly 24mm diameter, embossed circular oak-leaf wreath encompassing a Luftwaffe style eagle in flight clutching a swastika, which is mounted on a section of clean ribbed rayon, 2nd class Iron Cross ribbon. All four soldered attachment prongs intact to reverse. Gilt finish is fully retained and still quite bright. Details are all crisp and clear. Clasp comes in its original cardboard issue case with simulated black grained leather covering. Magnetic staggered hinge to reverse. Case opens to reveal blue velvet covered interior with removable plate to bottom. Removable plate has grooves cut to both top and bottom edges to secure the ribbon. Of Note: In February 1940 Göring introduced the Goblet of Honor to recognize heroic acts by those who already held the Iron Cross, 1ST class, but for which the German Cross in Gold or the Knight's Cross would not be suitable. In July 1944 the Goblet was discontinued and replaced by the Honor Roll Clasp, and previous recipients of the goblet were issued the Honor Roll Clasp. Mint and nice!
