L009661 DR3 FLIGHT NAVIGATION COMPUTER. (Dreieckrechner 3)

BACKGROUND: The Luftwaffe utilized assorted mechanical and electrical radio directional aids, primitive radars, precision target detection equipment and flight personnel were given basic training in manual navigation and map reading. Personnel who had elected or had been chosen to become flight Observer’s undertook further blind-flight and navigational training. Along with the mechanical and electrical radio directional navigation aids the Luftwaffe also utilized two different models of manual flight navigation computers which were basically circular slide rulers to assist in navigation calculations. Of Note: The Luftwaffe used a specific Gradnetzmeldeverfahren, ({Map}, Degree Network Reference System), navigation system that was based on the Greenwich longitude/latitude degree system to pinpoint any precise location. The Luftwaffe’s Gradnetzmeldeverfahren differed slightly from the coordinate systems used by the army and the navy.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 15cmdiameter, dual sided, multi-piece, molded plastic construction, flight navigation computer with aluminum rivets. One side features a clear plastic, static, outer circle with impressed 360 degree numerical compass markings with the four main directional point markings, of "N", "S" "O" and "W", and minor directional markings of, "NO", "SO", SW", and NW". This outer circle encompasses a movable, pale yellow plastic, inner circle which also has impressed 360 degree numerical compass markings, and the outline of an aircraft with directional arrow. Mounted on top of both of these circles is a clear plastic, movable arm with an additional directional arrow. The inner circle and arm can both be turned to align with the outer circle to determine the appropriate computations. The other side of the computer features pale yellow plastic, movable inner and outer circles with a static clear plastic circular ring in between the two. The central movable circle has the addition of a clear plastic movable arm with directional arrow. All three circles also have impressed numerical degree, temperature and kilometer markings. Both the inner circle and outer circles and the arm can be turned to align with the static in-between circle to determine the appropriate computations. Computer also has impressed script which includes, "Dreieckrechner Baumuster: DR 3 Tp", (Computer Construction Model DR3 Trigonometrical), "Gerät Nr. 127 107 D-1", (Equipment number), "Anforderz. FL. 23825", (Flight Requisition number), three letter code marked "gwr" for Pape Hamburg-Altona", (Manufacturer), and "Fertigstellung: Jan 1944", (Completion date). Nice example.
