L008395 AWARD PLAQUE "Luftwaffe Honor Shield for Achievement in the South".

A 15.5cm x 19cm painted, cast plaque that reads “FÜR HERVORRAGENDE TECHNISCHE LEISTUNGEN IM SÜDEN OR FOR OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE IN THE SOUTH”. Some of the paint is chipped.

Ehrenschild für Hervorragende Technische Leistung des Oberbefehlshaber Süd. Instituted in 1942, the “Honor Shield for Outstanding Technical Achievements in the Southern Command” was intended to reward special achievements in the technical branch off the Luftwaffe that could not be rewarded with an existing portable award. It is constructed out of a cast iron base that has been chemically blackened. The rectangular shaped obverse features a Luftwaffe eagle on top of a Mediterranean map area above “Für hervorragende technische Leistungen im Süden”, Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring’s signature, his full title “Generalfeldmarschall Oberbefehlshaber Süd” and “H SCH & T” to the very bottom. Foundry marking: “Lauchhammer” (within an octagon). Hanging wire is missing. It measures 5 7/8 inches wide by 7 5/16 inches tall. Scarce plaque.
