L006695 HERMANN GÖRING PANZER DIVISION EM/NCO'S BREAST EAGLE. (Hoheitsabzeichen)
BACKGROUND: The Luftwaffe pattern national eagle was originally introduced for wear by Fliegerschaft, (Pilot Base), personnel of the DLV, Deutscher Luftsportsverband, (German Air Sports Association), the clandestine, civilian, forerunner of the Luftwaffe on August 18TH 1934 and was officially adopted for wear by all Luftwaffe personnel on March 1ST 1935. The original first pattern national eagle was utilized until a slightly modified, second pattern national eagle was introduced in late 1936 or early 1937. Regulations dictated that the national eagle was to be worn on almost all headgear and on the right breast of almost all uniforms with a few minor exceptions. Officer’s ranks generally utilized hand embroidered breast eagles as opposed to the machine embroidered breast eagles as utilized by EM/NCO ranks. Of Note: Machine woven and even metal alloy national eagles were also utilized in limited quantities. Also Of Note: Officer holding ranks of Generalmajor to Generalfeldmarschall and Reichsmarschall Göring utilized gold colored accoutrements including breast eagles as opposed to the silver versions worn by all other ranks. The evolution of the Hermann Göring units can be traced back to at least January 12TH 1934 when the Landes Polizei Gruppe Wecke z.b.V, (State Police Group Wecke for Special Purposes), was renamed Landes Polizei Gruppe General Göring. On September 23RD 1935 the Landes Polizei Gruppe General Göring was transferred from control of the Police to control of the Luftwaffe and was renamed, Regiment General Göring. On March 1ST 1942 the Regiment General Göring was expanded to become the Reinforced Regiment (mot.) Hermann Göring. The Reinforced Regiment (mot.) Hermann Göring was upgrade to Brigade status on July 21ST 1942 and to Divisional status on October 17TH of that year. The Hermann Göring Division was virtually completely destroyed in North Africa in May 1943 and the survivors were reformed into the Hermann Göring Panzer Division on July 15TH 1943. The Hermann Göring Panzer Division was redesignated, Hermann Göring Fallschirm Panzer Division on January 6TH 1944 and was used as a cadre for the formation of the Hermann Göring Fallschirm Panzer Korps in September 1944. Personnel serving in Panzer units of the Hermann Göring Division were issued with the black Panzer wrap around tunic and the black overseas and M43 field caps. The national breast eagle worn on the black Panzer wrap tunics was identical to the standard issue eagle but was worked on a black background as opposed to the regular Luftwaffe blue/grey background. Of Note: Airfield Ground crew personnel were also issued with a black drill/work uniform but no breast eagle was to be worn on these garments.
