L003265 LUFTWAFFE DEATH CERTIFICATE. (Totenschein)

BACKGROUND: With the reintroduction of conscription in 1935, the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), activated the Wehrersatzdienststelle, (Military Recruiting Offices), throughout Germany to process and administer the call up procedure. From the beginning of an individuals military service to his eventual discharge the appropriate Wehrersatzdienststelle was the responsible authority for all administrative processing and records. When a soldier was killed in battle the deceased’s company commander would forward the information through the proper channels to the appropriate Wehrersatzdienststelle who in turn would send an official notification to the next-of-kin. The company commander was also required to send a personal letter to the next-of-kin to express the condolences of the victim’s fellow soldiers. Quite often the company commanders personal letter was accompanied by an unofficial certificate at the discretion of the unit. Of Note: The Reich conscription laws of 1935 dictated that each of the three branches of service would be allocated a percentage of the available recruits according to their manpower requirements with the army being allotted the lions share of roughly 66% of eligible personnel followed by the Luftwaffe who were accorded roughly 25% with the Kriegsmarine receiving the remaining 9% of personnel.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 21cm x 15cm, light weight paper printed death certificate features a large, black printed, Luftwaffe eagle with out-stretched wings clutching a swastika in it’s talons to the top center. The script indicates that a "Oberleutnant", was killed on, "15. Dez 1941". Authorizing signature with the appropriate command inkstamp. Shows the expected age and use, but overall nice condition.
