L015578 DOG TAG HG "HG Schw-Flak. Ers. Abt.62". (Erkennungsmarken)

BACKGROUND: On mobilization of the German Armed Forces in August 1939 all personnel were issued an identification tag to be worn on a cord around the neck. Following the outbreak of WWII all new recruits were issued a dog tag on their induction to military service. If killed or wounded half the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 70mm long by 50mm wide, zinc construction oval ID tag. Three 15mm long slits run down center of tag lengthwise, to facilitate breaking tag in half if necessary. Two holes to top section and one to bottom for securing cord. Tag has identical stamps on either side of slits, "Schw-Flak. Ers. Abt. 62" and personal roster number "246".
