K026076 DOG TAG.(Erkennungsmarken)
BACKGROUND: Prussian Kaiser Friedrich Ludwig Wilhelm I original adopted identification, (dog), tags for the Imperial Prussian Armed Forces during the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian war and although the dog tags underwent numerous modifications through the years they are still in use in the German Armed Forces today. During the Third Reich era Kriegsmarine personnel only wore their dog tags when ordered to do so. Regulations concerning Kriegsmarine dog tags were address in 1932, with modifications in 1936, 1939, 1941, and 1942. Originally Officer’s, Official’s and civilian employees were responsible for purchasing their own dog tags while EM/NCO’s dog tags were a standard issue item. On mobilization of the German Armed Forces in August 1939 all personnel were issued an dog tag to be worn on a cord around the neck at all times. Following the outbreak of WWII all new recruits were issued a dog tag on their registration for military service. If killed or wounded half of the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing.
