K025568 EM/NCO’C GREATCOAT. (Mantel)

BACKGROUND: German Naval uniforms and headgear were based on traditional designs that date back to the creation of the Prussian Navy in 1848, and although the uniforms and headgear did evolve during the interim years, many items used during the Third Reich would still have been quite recognizable to the Imperial sailor. The Greatcoat was a basic uniform item issued to all ranks, with minor variations, and followed the basic design of the Imperial German Navy greatcoat.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Navy blue wool construction, double breasted style, full length greatcoat, with fold back lapels and lay down collar. Coat features dual, vertical, parallel, rows of six front closure buttons with corresponding button holes on both the left and right front panels. Coat has two, diagonally angled, slash, front hip pockets with slightly angular flaps at waistline. The left hip pocket has two, short, ribbed black rayon straps with a brass, swivel, friction clip to each strap for wearing the sword or dagger. The straps are machine stitched to the interior pocket flap seam. Straight cut sleeves have simulated French cuffs. Reverse of coat has a half-waist belt with a central retaining button and two ornamental buttons to waistline. Side seam edges of the reverse half-waist belt each have, vertically positioned, dual-layered scalloped panels with an additional two ornamental buttons at the scalloped tips. Reverse also has a central, vertical tail skirt slash with a three button closure. All the buttons, excluding the tail skirt slash buttons, are the fire gilt alloy type with embossed fouled anchor on a horizontally ribbed field with simulated twisted rope outer border. Coat is roughly size 114cm chest. The coat was never issued and still has the original tailors tag sewn to the left sleeve. Few moth nips to the back of the collar area. Liner has some holes. Nice coat.
