(Reservefiltereinsatz Mündstuck)BACKGROUND: With the development of poisonous gasses used as offensive weapons in WWI appropriate defensive gasmasks also had to be developed. The German WWI M1915 and M1917 gasmasks evolved into the Reichswehr era M24 gasmask and eventually into the M30 and M38 gasmasks used in WWII. All German Army personnel were issued with a gasmask, carrying canister and accessories and were required to have it readily available at all times. Although the use of chemical warfare agents was considered by the German OKW, Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), fear of the Allies retribution forced them to reconsider and shelf the idea. Fear of the potential use of chemical warfare agents made the gasmask and canister a constant companion of the German soldier through-out the war. Kriegsmarine regulations of March 25TH 1944 introduced a new emergency gas protection breathing device which consisted of a mouthpiece that was designed to fit on any of the standard gasmask filters, a nose clip and a carrying pouch. The emergency gas protection breathing device was designed to be easily carried and was intended for immediate usage in the event of a surprise gas attack.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 50mm long, 50mm tall, molded black rubber construction emergency gas protection breathing device mouthpiece. One end of the mouthpiece consists of a roughly, 50mm diameter, opened circular panel with internal screw threads to attach to a gasmask filter while the other end is the horizontally extended mouthpiece with two cut-out semi-circular breathing holes. The top edge of the horizontally extended mouthpiece has a small cut-out circular port for attaching a neck cord. The interior of the mouthpiece is well marked with embossed serial numbers, the manufacturers code, "pts", indicating an unknown manufacturer and the date, "44". The mouthpiece is in overall good condition with light age soiling.
