BACKGROUND: Protective leather jackets, pants and coveralls were listed as special clothing and were issued to engine personnel, certain deck and bridge personnel and U-Boat personnel when engaged in specific functions.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Set consists of jacket and trousers and overseas cap. Three-quarter length, multi-panel, grey leather construction jacket features a five button front closure with single metal hook and eye at neck and small stand-up collar. Left breast of jacket has a horizontal slash pocket with straight edged flap. Jacket also has two, horizontal slash, forward hip pockets also with straight edged flaps. Reverse of jacket has a central vertical seam with no tail skirt vent. Interior of the jacket is fully lined in heavy charcoal grey wool with black rayon lining to sleeves. Interior right breast has a leather reinforced horizontal slash pocket. Sleeve lining has the addition of charcoal grey wool "storm cuffs" with tunnel looped elastics to ends. Buttons are all the stamped sheet metal type with vertically embossed fouled anchor on a horizontally ribbed field encompassed by a raised smooth ring and a simulated twisted rope like outer ring and all retain the majority of their original field-grey paint. Buttons look to be all original stitching. The protective leather uniforms were intended to fit over the standard service uniform and were cute large as result. This example is roughly size 42" chest. Jacket comes with multi-panel, grey leather construction straight legged long pants. Pants feature a four button French fly with an additional metal hook and eye at waistband. Pants have two, vertical slash, side seam pockets with reinforcement stitching. All original buttons and stitching. Pants are roughly size 34" waist. Nice worn and used example showing the expected age and wear.
