J08550 (IJA) OFFICER'S TROPICAL RAIN CAPE.

A khaki-colored, water repellant, cotton twill officer’s rain cape, with a detachable hood. The unlined, light-weight, three-quarter length cape has a single-breasted, four wooden button front fly closure, one of whose buttons is absent, and a hook and eye closure at the neck. Five smaller wooden buttons run underneath its lay-down collar, each of which fasten the detachable hood to the cape. The hood, in the same color and material as the coat, has two equally small wooden buttons to its left facing side, and one to its right, with the two former securing a rectangular piece of matching material with buttonholes to its pointed ends. This flap could be unbuttoned at its rear and swiveled forward to mate with the button to the right forward edge, closing the hood opening under the chin. To the interior, a piece of matching material descends approximately 12" from the collar all around to each forward edge, doubling the cape along the shoulders. To the left forward edge of this is inkstamped a vertical rectangle divided into two columns, the rightmost having six characters to it: the top two indicating the "Showa" era, followed by the characters for "10" and "7," then the character for "year," with the bottom character being indistinguishable; this would indicate that the cape was manufactured in the seventeenth year of Showa, or 1942. Beneath this is a smaller rectangle which also has kanji to it, alongside of which is a circle with kanji to it that must the manufacturer’s seal. Although the cape exhibits typical age and usage soiling, there are no tears or repairs, with the missing button being the only distracting feature. Nice example, hard to find.
